Recyclable Consumable

The Water Equation

Water is the one consumable where good engineering can slash launch mass by 90% or more. Unlike food, water can be recovered and reused. That makes it the most solvable problem on the list.

The Baseline Demand

Drinking + Cooking

1 gal/day

Per person. Absolute minimum for hydration and food preparation. Does not include hygiene.

Total Usage (ISS)

~3 gal/day

Per person including hygiene, food prep, and system cooling. ISS runs extremely tight water budgets.

Weight Per Gallon

8.34 lb

Water is heavy and incompressible. Every gallon launched costs 8.34 lb of payload.

The Recycling Spectrum

These four panels show the same scenario: 100 crew, 180 days. The only thing that changes is how good your recycling is. Watch what happens to the tonnage.

0% Recycling

75 tons

150,000 lb. Impossible at this scale. No vehicle can carry this.

85% Recycling

11.25 tons

Massive reduction but still enormous. Requires reliable recycling hardware.

93% Recycling

5.25 tons

ISS-level performance. Proven technology — but ISS has 6 crew, not 100.

98% Recycling

1.5 tons

Recently demonstrated on ISS with the Brine Processor Assembly. Not yet a long-term operational standard.

The Catch

Recycling hardware has mass too

The ISS Water Recovery System weighs thousands of pounds and needs regular spare parts. At colony scale, that infrastructure becomes its own mass problem. The water you save shows up again as hardware weight.

Recycling requires power

Distillation, filtration, and chemical treatment all draw continuous power. In a power emergency, water recycling has to compete with life support and comms for whatever's left.

Each percentage point past 93% costs more than the last

Getting from 85% to 93% is an engineering problem. Getting past 93% is a materials science problem nobody has solved at scale. Each extra percentage point means pulling water out of progressively nastier sources.

Water is the most solvable consumable problem. It's still genuinely hard at colony scale, but it's the one where better engineering actually moves the needle.

The water equation changes everything.
